Author Biography

I am an author from Iowa who has always put everything I am capable of into my writing. I have written a few movie scripts, one of which brought me a first place win in a script writing competition. Two of my books, "The Land of Eternal Rain," and, "Twisting Darkness," recieved 5 star awards from review sites.

I love creating stories and endeavor to focus solely on great storytelling, and keeping whatever personal beliefs I may hold out of my books since they shouldn't have any relevance to the story unless I am writing a book or movie script on that particular subject.

The only thing I hope for is that people enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.

Twisting Further into Darkness is a horror anthology by J. R. Gridley. The book is a collection of five short stories that are interconnected with each other. That is, the events taking place in each story are related to each other and they all take place in the same city but with slight time differences between each story’s events. Another thing each of the five stories has in common are supernatural occurrences that could result in a character’s death, as each story has a terrifying monstrosity that wants to kill anything with a pulse in sight. Will any of the unfortunate souls survive? And what connects each of the horrible scenarios they find themselves in?

I loved how diverse the settings for each story were, as in one story the setting was a forest and, in another, a hospital served as the setting. The change in scenery kept the book interesting and unpredictable. Another great thing about this book is how it kept me captivated for its entire duration. It had me hooked from the get-go as each story was engaging and each had great moments of unnerving horror. One thing that really impressed me was how well developed the characters were as I wasn’t expecting a book with short stories to have such well-written characters. I could relate to the characters as they were all authentic and life-like. The revelation of the connection between each story was also really well done and very satisfying. Overall, J. R. Gridley wrote an excellent book and one that I’d have no problem revisiting as it’s just that good. I’d recommend Twisting Further into Darkness to readers that love the horror genre as this book will most certainly make your skin crawl.

Twisting Further into Darkness is an amalgamation of five inter-connected short horror stories written by J.R. Gridley. "Nightmare in the Woods" follows a group of youngsters as they find themselves stranded in the woods with a prehistoric monster on their trail. In "Foresight", a serial killer is forced to confront his past victims when his sanctuary becomes a haunting ground of nightmares. "The Box" follows two security guards at a hospital as they struggle to get through the most horrific night of their lives. "Pieces" is the story of a woman who is offered the chance to mend her broken heart, piece by piece, with disastrous results. In "Shadows", a CEO of a pharmaceutical company finds his life turned upside down after a mysterious woman reveals to him his dire situation.

Author J.R. Gridley combines several different elements from the horror genre, including slasher, psychic, and neo-noir, to create a tantalizing anthology that feels unique, authentic, and thoroughly captivating to read. Twisting Further into Darkness provides thrills galore, whether with monsters chasing their victims through the woods or people going through an existential crisis and doubting the very essence of their realities. Each story provides something different in tone and characterization while being connected by an overarching narrative. All of them share a similarly exhilarating climax where everything comes crashing down for the characters. The characters have distinct personalities and seamlessly slot into their roles to move the plot forward. If you're a fan of the horror genre, I couldn't recommend Twisting Further into Darkness more.

Twisting Further Into Darkness by J. R. Gridley is a collection of horror tales that will pull you in from the first page as it moves through a town and, one by one, the characters are killed off. A group of friends finds their friend horribly murdered. A creature waits for them in the darkness, one that will not be easy to escape. A serial killer is on the hunt, but things are not going to go his way. The story then moves to a hospital with a dubious history and where the staff may not survive the night. As you read on, you learn that each story is connected to the last, with the new one recapping the previous events. Moving through narrators, the stories tell of a horrific night and the body count created by monsters and madmen.

J. R. Gridley has written a set of intriguing tales with Twisting Further Into Darkness. Each story jumps straight into the action, pulling you into the story and keeping you reading. Each story has its own merit, but I think my favorite was Foresight. There is definitely something here for most horror fans. The author doesn't shy away from the gore and I think it adds to the story. It is quite dialogue-driven, but it is well-written and natural sounding. I don't think it would fall under young adult exactly. I guess it would depend on the reader, but this is certainly one for horror fans. I would recommend it.
