Uni the Unicorn. written by K. A. Mulenga and illustrated by Boutique Books, is a bright and engaging children’s fable with a positive message for young and adult readers alike. Mulenga has crafted a whimsical world in which Uni the Unicorn learns kindness by example from Daddy Unicorn, Mummy Unicorn, Grandpa Unicorn, and Grandma Unicorn, all of whom reinforce for Uni that “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Later, at play with friends Umi and Uti, Uni meets a new friend and has a chance to put kindness into action. The story is uplifting and sure to please and the characters are genuine and beguiling, with clear motives for their words and actions. This ensures that children will be able to understand the feelings and experiences of the characters.

The text is simple and easy to read and the illustrations are colorful, cheerful, and inviting. Of particular interest (and very much appreciated) is the fact that the text is presented alone, in bold print on sky-blue pages, and alternating with the illustrations that mirror the story as it progresses. This will help emerging readers comprehend the text without distractions. So many books for children superimpose the text over the pictures, causing young readers to be frustrated with so much to pay attention to. Thus Mulenga’s clean, crisp approach is a welcome relief from the visually demanding format so often utilized in children’s books. K. A. Mulenga’s Uni the Unicorn is a visually appealing and socially aware fable with positive messages sure to inspire worthwhile dialogue between the children who read it and the adults who care for them.
