Universal Anthems: Revolutionary Message for a Global Cause by Aadil Farook is a work of poetry encompassing thoughts on life, spirituality, and interpersonal relationships through the lens of Islam. The poetry is lyrical and thoughtful, evoking images and feelings that stir the mind and soul. The ideas expressed are philosophical and humane and cover questions and concerns most of us have at one time or another. How do we stray so far from spirituality and end up in a world that doesn't care as much as it used to for the well-being of its inhabitants? Why do we choose materialism and success over love and humility? The themes discuss the revolutionary side of Islam, and the work as a whole ends up being an essential piece of literature to contemplate and enjoy.
I like this book of poetry because, even though it's written with Islam in mind, it can also apply to other faiths, including Christianity and Judaism. Most of the poems pose questions for us to think about and answer for ourselves but aren't maudlin or condescending in their approach. The rhymes are spot-on and are constructed in a clever, natural way rather than a forced, contrived one. I also like that the author recognizes a need for our world to heal, and poetry like this could be the catalyst. This poet's title - The English Poet of Islam - is fitting, and you'll find the poems enriching and thought-provoking, the way we find profundity in proverbs and song. This volume of poetry isn't limited to those with faith. Those with no faith and those seeking an inner revolution fired by truth and life can look to these poems for inspiration. Fans of Iqbal and Rumi and poetry with intellectual messages will fall in love with Universal Anthems: Revolutionary Message for a Global Cause by Aadil Farook.
