To lose a loved one to leukemia is a sad affair indeed. And it’s exactly what Carole Hersh is facing in her memoir, Unwashed Radishes. Carole’s beloved husband, Harry, has been diagnosed with the illness and now faces the battle of his lifetime. But not all battles are won, even with the strongest of warriors. Carole shares in her story how a simple blood test reveals that something is wrong with Harry’s blood cells. This leads to more testing, diagnosis, and the hope for a speedy resolution. But leukemia is an uphill battle, even with today’s medical marvels. There are no guarantees, only a hope for remission. This touching memoir shares in a family’s fight to save a loved one using every means necessary. Their hopes, disappointments, and faith will be tested along the way. Watching Harry take a step forward only to take two backward becomes commonplace. Friends and family members surround the family with love and prayer spread through messages and letters so eloquently provided in the book. These links become Carole and Harry’s lifeline to share in their wins and their losses with the people who are partaking in their struggles. And Harry’s fighting spirit is uplifted as he bravely battles on to the end.
