"Vampirates: Immortal War" is the sixth book in the series by Justin Somper. Not having read the first five books, I feared that I would immediately be lost in this book. However, that was not the case. The author did a superb job of acquainting the reader with relevant issues so that the current book would grab the reader's attention from the first. The Pirate Federation has combined with the Nocturnals to challenge forever the power of the Vampirates. Led by evil-minded Sodorio and his wife Lola, the Vampirates set out to conquer the alliance, thinking it is weak and dwindling in numbers.
The Vampirates have underestimated the power of brother and sister twins Connor and Grace Tempest. Connor is granted authority as a pirate captain and Grace has become a powerful healer while working with the wounded in the ongoing war.
This book has it all for adventure readers. Deadly enemies are pitted against one another in a fight to death. Both evil and good suffer in the battle and alliances and friendships are sorely tested. Lola gives birth to twins only to lose one of them while husband Sidorio wages a crazed war to crush the Pirates. The pace of the battles in no way diminishes the development and depth of relationships and this is a rare occurrence in an adventure book. The reader knows the characters and becomes interested in the outcome. It is a book of beginnings and ends and of new beginnings which tease the imagination of the reader to the very end.
