Veggielante Violence by Max Parrott is the fourth book in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries. Angela’s peaceful daily routine is interrupted when she receives a call from the chief informing her about the death of a game warden. She never turns down a case and she wasn’t about to start with this one. Angela is instantly intrigued when only one clue, an odd-sized bullet, is all there is to go on. This leads her to discover that a poacher is stalking the woods. Is it connected to the murder? The only way she can find the answers is to make one bold move: go undercover. But this comes with danger as she could end up close to a killer. She braves a dangerous situation with her dog Ruff to uncover clues to help her track down the poacher and catch a killer.
Angela is a down-to-earth character whose charm successfully sets the tone of the world that Max Parrott has created. She strikes a balance between mystery-solving and taking care of her critters, which are two elements that blend into the atmosphere of the story. Parrott does a splendid job of establishing her as a well-rounded character with a big heart, cleverness, and genuine curiosity. The author wastes no time in setting up the case and getting Angela involved. Ruff steals the spotlight with his adorable personality. Parrott uses details to create this sweet companion in Angela’s sleuthing antics, such as aiding her in going undercover. The premise stems from respect and love for animals. But it is also seen in the characters, from Angela’s love of her critters to her best friend’s view of animals as sacred. The writing uses charming details to capture the liveliness and attitudes of the animals such as Ruff having a doggy smile and happy barking. These details maintain the cozy ambiance and draw you into Angela’s mindset. Veggielante Violence is a lighthearted mystery that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling while reading and draws upon the love of animals and mystery.
