Vengeance at the Vineyard by Tana L. H. Boerger is set at Château Beaulieu where, during wedding festivities, the family butler collapses, whispering his knowledge of who's responsible for a threatening message tied to the family dog. Later, it's discovered he was poisoned. Meanwhile, Genevieve searches for a missing heirloom ruby ring, sensing the presence of the family ghost, Charlotte Chaubert. She is later caught up in a growing mystery involving an art forgery scandal at the Laney Museum, where Lillie Langdon, the director, tries to manage the damage. During Christmas celebrations at the château, an explosion occurs, presumed to be more foul play. The investigation turns when Becca finds an ominously titled journal and little Ella's pony goes missing. When Ella herself disappears, the family realizes they're caught in a dangerous conspiracy greater than they ever expected.
Tana L. H. Boerger’s Vengeance at the Vineyard is a wonderfully immersive mystery that introduces some genuinely fresh, unexpected twists within the luxurious and privileged backdrop of a château. I found Boerger's use of the Nazi pillaging of art and a sophisticated cyber campaign to be rooted in a believable angle that elevated the overall story. This book is the third installment in the Lord and Lady Crosswick Mystery series, preceded by Money, Murder, Mayhem, and Art, Wine, and Crime, but it absolutely reads as a standalone and makes me want to go back and start with book one for more background on the family and their estate. Though the potential culprit is revealed early, the true focus lies in deciphering the motivations behind the titular vengeance. I love the paranormal elements, and Boerger’s sharp writing offers a menagerie of characters. This a read that will undoubtedly be roundly well received. Very highly recommended.
