At first glance, Jodie Chalker appears to be a typical sixteen-year-old teenager dealing with detachment as part of her growing pains. Yet closer inspection, as you turn the pages, reveals something more disturbing. In Visions of Tomorrow by Luis Ammerman. Jodie is constantly haunted by disturbing visions that blur the line between visions and reality, making her question her own sanity. These visions involve witnessing the deaths and struggles of people she comes into close contact with. Much as she tries to dismiss them and live a normal life, the visions only increase in persistence. Her psychological turmoil takes a turn for the worse when her mother is critically injured in a car accident. Her existential turmoil deepens further after being kidnapped by an undercover agent. This agent claims to be working against a shadowy organization engaged in unethical experiments.

Visions of Tomorrow by Luis Ammerman is a genuine treat for young adult readers. Unequivocally relatable, Jodie has typical teenage angst, yet with just the right dose of maturity to make her deep. The best part is that she is vulnerable—a young woman with a special gift (or curse) who struggles with its consequences. This makes her grounded, with a developed and unforced willpower. The pacing is carefully timed, and it blends well with the modulated motivations of every character. As Jodie races against time to find her family, her resourcefulness and creativity come into play. It is a “pressed for time” story done well. If you enjoy reading young adult books with extraordinary characters, Visions of Tomorrow is worth checking out.
