Voices From the Walls by J.C. Lara is a historical fiction novel taking place during Germany, France, and the Netherlands during World War II. The protagonist, Alec Rosenthal, lives a semi-privileged life with his mother, father, and sister when times begin to change in their small town. Jewish families are targeted ruthlessly by the Nazis, and Alec’s father, Yosef, is taken away on Kristallnacht, never to be seen by his family again. Alec’s mother, Elsa, decides the best recourse is to take her children to the Netherlands, but she is forced to leave them in the hands of a woman, who promises to deliver the children to their aunt. Life is calm for some time, but then Alec falls in love with a young woman, and they are forced to face his Jewish heritage. However, a revealing bit of information from his aunt shakes Alec’s world in a way he never expected.

Voices From the Walls by J.C. Lara held my attention throughout Alec’s long journey from boy to man. His experiences were believable, and the emotions he must have felt at the revelation of the truth of his birth must have shaken him to the core. The author also intersperses the novel with historical facts of the time, although I felt there were passages where the characters could have brought the facts into the story themselves through dialogue. Aside from that, the novel was historically accurate to my knowledge, and I would be interested in seeing what else this author has to offer in the future.
