Walter, Whatever Will Be, Will Be by Greg Bulla follows three young friends and their adventures as they navigate school, family, and friendship over a season in 1976, Oaktown, North Carolina. Walter Taylor and his two best friends are about to start second grade at Forest Lane Elementary School. To their relief, all three are placed in the same class. When Walter, Tommy, and Johnny are not trying to do stunts with their bicycles, fishing, or playing in the woods, they are busy reading comic books, as all three love superheroes. While Walter is a big fan of the rock band KISS, Tommy worships Elvis Presley. The boys plan a big show for the school where everyone can display their talents. And one of the participants is Darla, a classmate Walter likes.

Walter, Whatever Will Be, Will Be takes readers on a nostalgic trip to the mid-1970s, where, devoid of smartphones, social media, video games, and the internet, kids had to find their own ways to pass the time. Greg Bulla's characters feel so real. The author masterfully captures what it feels like to be a seven-year-old kid and their outlook toward the world with the portrayals of Walter, Tommy, and Johnny. The narrative is more of a series of slice-of-life adventures that Walter and his friends undergo over a school year. I loved the friendship between the three second-graders and found Walter's bond with Darla to be adorable. As a heavy metal fan, I also liked the nod to KISS. All in all, it's an engrossing adventure for children and young adults alike.
