What Does Jesus See in You? by Coleen Aquino and Conrad Aquino isn’t a typical 20-day devotional. It’s more of a guided journey into how we view ourselves versus how Jesus actually sees us. The book is built on the idea that most of us are constantly performing to find worth or security, while the Gospels show a version of Jesus who looks right past that. Over the course of four stages—starting with where you are and moving toward how you live—the authors use a mix of Bible stories, like the prodigal son or Peter, and psychological concepts like Maslow’s hierarchy to help you pinpoint what’s really driving your choices. It’s less about being a better person and more about realizing that the acceptance you’re chasing is something you already have. It’s a gentle, logical progression from feeling like you're constantly "behind" to realizing you're already guided.
I really liked how down-to-earth and warm Coleen and Conrad Aquino’s writing felt. Instead of just breezing through, I found myself actually stopping to answer the questions at the end of each chapter. The authors did a great job of connecting ancient stories to very modern stresses, like social media comparison and work burnout, without it feeling forced. The "In the Eyes of a Child" sections were a personal highlight—they really helped clear away the mental noise that usually comes with books on faith and identity. As someone who has definitely struggled with the performance side of religion, I loved that the book leaned into grace without getting preachy. If you’re looking for something that handles identity with empathy rather than guilt, What Does Jesus See in You? is a beautiful resource.
