What Is a Stock? by Kelly Lee is a children's picture book that teaches young readers about businesses and stocks. The story follows Charlie, a gray rabbit who runs a bakery that sells various pastry treats. Although his bakery is doing well, he wants to make more treats and believes expanding his business is the way forward. Unfortunately, he does not have enough funds to fulfill his dream of becoming the Dessert King of his town. So, he approaches his friends and asks them to invest in his business by buying shares in Charlie Dessert Kingdom stock. However, his friends do not understand these business terms. Follow Charlie as he teaches his friends about investing and makes his dreams come true.
What Is a Stock? is an informative book that explains the basic concepts of buying shares in a company. It introduces young readers to adorable, friendly characters they will love getting to know. Kelly Lee does an excellent job of defining stocks, shares, and dividends in a way children can understand. For example, the author uses pieces of cake to explain what it means to own a piece of a company. The book encourages children to be entrepreneurial and to strive for more in life. Charlie could have been content with the stage his business was at, but he wished for more and aimed for the best. I loved that his friends believed in him enough to invest in his business and ended up benefiting from it. The colorful illustrations complement the story and perfectly explain the author's concepts. I loved reading this book and highly recommend it to parents who want to introduce their children to the magical power of investing.
