What is Hidden by Emily Camp tells the story of five childhood friends reunited as adults. Maddison James finds her emotions triggered when Nick Cafferty returns to attend Gage’s wedding to group outsider Kylee. Hayden Wallace intends to propose to Maddison, but her priority is the well-being of her son, Braxton. Hayden’s sister Heidi is tired of her long string of romantic flings. During middle school, the group supposedly undertook a pact never to date each other, but somehow, they have all broken that resolution. As Gage discovers his marriage is contracted on shaky ground, his freedom threatens to expose all the secret love triangles.
What is Hidden by Emily Camp combines new adult concerns with emotional drama. I was able to sympathize with Maddi; her emotions seem genuine, and whatever mistakes she had made, she is determined to make a good life for her son. Hayden became less likable as the story progressed, but I still wished him well as one of the original group. Heidi shows the most character development although I hoped she would make her mind up and not wait for a crisis to stop her from hedging her bets. Gage seems like a genuinely lovely guy who has been trapped by circumstances. I thought Nick was personable, but a bit clueless fluctuating between women he had slept with. Waiting for the truth to emerge created suspense that will last beyond this volume. What is Hidden by Emily Camp oozes with dramatic irony and reminds me of a daytime soap opera!
