What's Going on With My Family? (A Roadmap to Healing Trauma, Unlocking Your Hidden Power, and Remembering What Is Sacred) by Kelly Bohnhoff is a nonfiction book on relationships. It would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults looking to begin their journey of self-discovery and healing. The world is filled with relationships, truths, and lies that can alter one’s perception of oneself. This book provides a guide to understanding and reclaiming one’s true self. Are you ready to learn who you are as an individual, how to heal your past trauma, and how to end the cycle of family trauma?

What's Going on With My Family? by Kelly Bohnhoff is a well-written book with an intriguing cover that grabbed my professional interest as a psychology graduate the moment I saw it. I found the author extremely knowledgeable on both trauma and healing trauma—her approach is innovative and effective. I liked how she focused on more positive emotions like compassion, forgiveness, and courage as this made the book feel uplifting rather than depressing. The author did not just focus on the most well-known traumas like abuse and neglect, but on a wide variety of traumas including chronic pain, incarceration, and even pandemic-based isolation. I found the inclusion of the trauma from pandemic isolation to be extremely helpful in that, before reading this book, I had not truly considered the fact that it was a trauma. Overall, I enjoyed learning from Dr. Bohnhoff's book, and I plan to integrate her teachings into my own life.

What's Going on With My Family? A Roadmap to Healing Trauma, Unlocking Your Hidden Power, and Remembering What Is Sacred by Kelly Bohnhoff is an intriguing read. The subtitle promises that this is the book that will more than just help you understand why your family may have had so much drama; Bohnhoff aims to help you overcome trauma by becoming the best 'you' possible. It is acknowledged that family trauma stems from various external and internal factors. Family members can scar each other knowingly and unknowingly. Ultimately, Bohnhoff recommends that families heal through spiritual maturity. She is a proponent of the idea that every human is spiritually linked and part of a divine consciousness. Hence, recognizing our divine nature through the practice of meditation is a big part of the healing process.

Family is the basic unit that builds up a functional society. I appreciate that Bohnhoff identifies the umbrella of trauma drama, a coping mechanism for issues such as stress, limiting beliefs, disease, addiction, etc. This and many other concepts are portrayed through visually appealing illustrations. Although there is a lot of information being relayed, the book is formatted in such a way that the reader is not overwhelmed. An important theme in this work is that of spirituality. The spiritual beliefs that are conveyed by the author are not explicitly associated with any religious group. Kelly Bohnhoff’s What's Going on With My Family? is a well-written, thought-provoking work on an important subject.

In What's Going on With My Family?, Kelly shares practical guidelines and eye-opening insights on the subject of understanding and healing from family trauma. The reader is led to understand the starting points of family trauma and the various ways it manifests in one's life. Kelly explains how spirituality can help us heal ourselves and our families, guiding us to actions and ideas that inspire hope for a brighter future and belief in the capacity for healing.

Kelly Bohnhoff employs simple language that makes the lessons about healing accessible to a wide audience, including readers who are not psychology professionals. As someone who had a difficult relationship with his father growing up, the author's personal stories resonated with me. Like Kelly, I felt my love for my father wane when I faced rejection from him, and I have learned from the book that my self-love was the main casualty. I appreciated receiving this and several other important messages. From practical guidelines to spiritual revelations and introspective questions, What's Going on With My Family? is a rich, detailed resource for readers seeking to heal from family trauma. Read it and practice its useful guidelines to recognize aspects of your life that are linked to family trauma and how to rise above its limitations both personally and as a family.
