When Being a Nurse Was Fun by Ann Watt is a compelling memoir of a dedicated ICU nurse for 30 years. Ann narrates about her time at Fitchburg State College and adds a humorous account of her passing out while attending a cardiac procedure. The author opens up about personal losses and tells us of the ups and downs of her career as a critical care nurse in hospitals in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Ann reveals the ins and outs of the profession through stories about working night shifts, taking care of unforgettable patients, and playing pranks on her colleagues. When Being a Nurse Was Fun is a great book for every memoir lover, aspiring and experienced nurse alike, and all those who respect and cherish people of this amazing profession.
Ann Watt's humorous writing style makes the narrative very engaging. Ann uses easy-to-understand language for those readers who do not have a medical background, like myself. Also, When Being a Nurse Was Fun includes a handy glossary explaining medical terms and abbreviations. Ann's love for her profession and empathy for patients shines through. The book is inspirational, for Ann urges us always seek an occupation that will unlock our potential and never choose a job that makes us unhappy. This is a book of historical significance as Ann describes to us times long before smartphones became available. I appreciated a chapter about nurses' superstition regarding the full moon and a puzzling story concerning “Sundowning” syndrome. Overall, When Being a Nurse Was Fun allowed me to understand professionals committed to saving lives better.
