M.H. Woodscourt brings us a riveting epic fantasy in When Darkness Hunts the Dawn. Betrayed from within their band of rebels, twins Mikoneh and Maya have been charged with treason in the Relvin Province of Oceana. Their punishment is death by fire. When the pyre is lit and the fire answers to Mikoneh instead of devouring him, they find their chance to escape. On the run with their friend, Penn, the trio is relentlessly hunted by dark mages who know more about them than they do. A war is brewing, and it seems the blood running through the veins of the twins holds more than secrets to uncover. Their only hope is to reach the Dragon King. Can they get to him in time with the help of their new allies?
Author M.H. Woodscourt has created an amazingly complex world in which you can easily get lost. Filled with lore, magic, and deep history, Book One of Dragons of Rokahn hits all the right spots. The pace is steady with a plot that will keep you going from start to finish. Characters are well described and very much relatable, even for fantasy fiction. A strong theme of familial bonds saturates these pages, which lends more depth and charisma to the story. When Darkness Hunts the Dawn is suitable for younger readers as well. A hint of warning, there are a few trauma triggers. These, however, are done with style and elegance and are an integral part of this book. I eagerly look forward to continuing the journey with the twins.
