Author Biography

During the first weeks of the pandemic in 2020, we ran out of books to read to my kids. My kids asked me about my childhood and seeing many things that have changed in our world today, I started telling them how different it was back then. Reading many Dr. Seuss books, it inspired me to put rhyme to my story of my childhood in Brooklyn, NY. After about 2 months of haggling and chipping at it, my story of When I Was Young was born.

When I Was Young is written by Joe Estacio and illustrated by Attarri Bros. The life of a young child is full of so many wonderful things. Playing for hours with friends until it is time to go home for the night, riding bikes in the park, and hearing the sound of the ice cream truck. The smell of the delicious food that moms and dads make and the unspoken understanding of the family teamwork it takes to clean up after dinner. Walking to school in the seasonable weather, going grocery shopping at the store, helping Mom at the laundromat, and going to Mass can hold some fond memories, too.

When I Was Young is a wonderful children’s story that outlines the world of childhood memories. I absolutely love the way this story shows how beautiful it can be to look back on the years that have passed and how important some of the smaller, day-to-day things we do can have such a lasting impact on our lives. The family setting and the home life plot made this a unique read that was both interesting and fun. The illustrations add a layer of beautiful color to this story that will hold the attention of kids as they read along. I recommend When I Was Young by Joe Estacio to anyone who loves a story that brings with it a feeling of peaceful nostalgia. I love how this story encourages kids not to take the little things in life for granted, and I hope to see more work like this from this author.
