David “Davey” Karoll, a therapist in New York, is among a handful of spouses of the city’s heroes, superhumans born with an H-gene, often women. Led by SolaRae, Davey’s wife, the heroes run a tight schedule as they are not only the city’s guardians, but also celebrities. To cope with the pressure of being their partners, Davey forms a support group for fellow spouses. However, when he loses a close friend from the group to mental health issues, and a client involved in a high-profile case to the justice system, he realizes two things. A lot of work was needed to address men’s mental health and failures in the justice system regarding the same, and he needed a platform to advocate for mental health and well-being. Davey decides to run for City Council. Find out how it all goes down in When the City Is Safe Again by Sean Mejias.

If you are looking for a literary novel blended with urban fantasy, realism, contemporary drama, and a splash of humor, When the City Is Safe Again by Sean Mejias is a great pick. The author introduces readers to fascinating characters with reflective, dynamic prose. Here, the gender roles are reversed in a world where men handle domestic work, and women go out to fix and protect the world. The cinematic depictions capture both the mundane and action-packed moments, highlighting the differences and significance of the characters' roles. These also brought the city to life on the pages. I kept looking forward to the witty scenes involving Davey’s interactions with the hot dog vendor and the desk sergeant at the police station. Davey and his group show the challenges men would face living such a life. The message in this book is for men to open up about their mental health struggles, because help exists.
