When the World Dies by D.E. Davis captures various evil deeds that have occurred in the 20th and 21st centuries as a result of the rise in totalitarianism and total war. The First World War was the first major world war, which cost millions of lives and left many maimed. Then the treaty that followed paved the way toward the Second World War, which would see the United States of America use nuclear weapons on civilian populations. The Germans committed huge atrocities in this war, but also the Allies, in their desperation to win, firebombed civilians, causing untold suffering. In China, we see atrocities committed by the Japanese in Nanking, where hundreds of thousands were massacred in just six weeks. The events of the Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen Square massacre are also events of infamy. How are things unfolding in the world currently, as we see the rise of dictators and events like the Ukraine invasion by the Russians? Are we closer to doomsday?

When the World Dies by D.E. Davis is an interesting read that captured my attention from the first chapter to the last. It helped me view the events currently happening in places like Iran from an informed point of view and what such conflicts can result in. Davis provided numerous references, which not only made the work effective in conveying the information but also helped shed some light on historical events that were never given much attention. This is a thought-provoking work that prompts us to consider our individual responsibilities in holding those in power accountable. The narration was excellent, which added to the overall appeal of the work. Readers will also appreciate the seamless flow of the narrative, which ensures no room for confusion. I look forward to reading something else by this great author.
