Logan Smith, a lonely sixteen-year-old boy, wants to end it all. Logan hates his life. He suffers from autism, depression, and anxiety. His classmates from school bully him every day, and his mother always reminds him how useless he is. However, when a bully begins to harass Logan, the new girl in school, Andrea Goldstein, dares to defend and save him. They become best friends, and Logan learns many valuable life lessons thanks to Andrea. But a hidden secret in his family will be revealed. When You Called My Name by Hermione Lee is a must-read as it answers questions like, "Do people who fail to meet society's standards not deserve love and respect?" "What makes a kid a victim one day and a potential perpetrator the next?" "Why do some resort to self-harm or suicide while others turn into shooters and robbers?"

When You Called My Name is a poignant and wonderful young adult novel. It shows the reader the importance of self-acceptance, self-love, and self-respect. It's about a toxic mother-son relationship, forgiveness, mental illness, bullying, appreciating the value of life, how fragile life is, and the power of friendship. This remarkable story teaches us that it's up to each of us to decide our own worth. It proves to us that bullies need therapy the most. Hermione Lee reminds us that showing emotions shouldn't be a privilege for a specific gender and that it's better to confront and validate one's problems and not hide from them. This novel is best suited to teenage boys and young adults. Still, I encourage anyone who feels oppressed by society or plagued by depression, anxiety, and other mental issues to read it.
