Where the Children Don't Play by J.L. Engel takes place in a remote mountain town called Lazarus. This small town is an idyllic place where the natural beauty hides some secrets of the past beneath the ground. The main character, Mason Sax, a deputy in the area, carries an emotional burden from childhood. Mason still cannot come to terms with his past. In particular, he suffers from a traumatic experience associated with a cave that was walled up for many years. The inhabitants of Lazarus know about the strange events in the past, but they prefer to ignore them. After livestock is attacked and cougars disappear, some subtle changes begin to take place in the area. In addition, the air in the town becomes oppressive; for instance, the pine-scented morning becomes unbearable. In addition, the silence becomes too heavy to listen to. When the abandoned lodge begins to appear in the residents' lives, Mason is forced to return to his past.
