Where the Night Never Ends by Annette Oppenlander is set during the Prohibition Era and shows the hardships people faced, not only due to the loss of work but also because of the Great Depression. The lives of three people unfold: Samantha Bruno, known as Sam, Paul McKay, thought to be a hobo, and Angelo Bruno, Sam’s brother, who disappeared when he went to work for Mr Remus doing bootlegging. Arthur is the anchor along the way. Each of these characters takes the reader on a journey of discovery, not only on how to survive, but also what each person learns throughout the journey, and how they find strengths and weaknesses and use them to their own advantage.
In Where the Night Never Ends, the author uses her characters like an artist painting a picture; at each downfall, they seem to find the strength to recoup and start again. The main characters are so realistic that the reader can identify with them in real life, as we have all walked the path that they took sometime in our own lives. Sam has to come to terms with what she had to do to survive. Paul has to learn how to forgive and accept who he was and where he will be going in the future. Angelo has to deal with the choices he made and accept the outcomes. Annette Oppenlander, with her magic pen, holds the reader’s attention from the first to the very last page. This is a book with so much history and delightful characters who assist Sam, Paul, and Angelo on their way. The reader will be surprised by the ending, which is unexpected but most welcome. This book is well worth more than one read, as it shows how we all have an inner strength that we can rely on and tap into when facing times of difficulty. A thought-provoking book. I really enjoyed reading it.
