Who Nuked the Duke: Atomic Testing and the Fallout Behind RKO's John Wayne Epic The Conqueror by John William Law is a story that spans over 30 years. The cold war dawned and took hold in the 1950s and the US government worked on the atom bomb. The book takes a hard look at the bomb program through the camera lens of filming the RKO epic, The Conqueror. Filming for this epic tale took place in Snow Canyon which was one of the reservoirs for nuclear fall-out and the years would show how it affected the cast and crew of the movie. Who Nuked the Duke takes a look at movie making and the atom bomb program, giving a unique view of both.
I have always been curious about what effects the nuclear program could have had in the long run on the land and the people. Who Nuked the Duke certainly gives a unique look at the situation. I personally had no idea so many people that were close to the production died of various cancers! The book itself is clearly well researched and gives solid scientific facts throughout and the format for the writing makes it easy to read. I found it both interesting and educational and enjoyed what I was reading from the first pages to the last. Anyone who is interested in history that has a Hollywood spin on it, as well as a serious one, would enjoy reading this book.
