Wickedly It Begins is a work of fantasy fiction penned for young adults by author Cathrina Constantine as the prequel novel to The Wickedly Series. Set in a lore filled with strong Christian themes and plenty of good versus evil action, in this prequel novel we find the initial origin stories of both Seely, a warrior for God who is blessed with the arduous gift of being able to slay demons, and Jack Chase, whose unlucky upbringing sees him raised by Asa, the leader of a cult that worships Satan. As this unlikely pair try to balance teenage life against their otherworldly duties, they are drawn together for a unique and emotive tale of fantasy and romance.
Paranormal romance fans who enjoy the opposites attract style of storytelling are in luck because you couldn’t get a more star-crossed pair than Seely and Jack, and this makes for high tension and readability through the plot. Author Cathrina Constantine takes command of every scene with some masterful consideration of action and how it ought to play out for maximum dramatic effect. The result is truly gripping and highly suitable for her YA audience, bringing together a pair of quite relatable young people who can’t help their feelings towards one another, no matter their duty to Heaven or Hell. The side characters are also exceedingly well developed. I enjoyed both Ezekiel the angel and Asa’s dark presence. Overall, Wickedly It Begins is a well-crafted Christian fantasy novel that readers teen and upwards are sure to love.
