Even when Sean was a baby, he was a strange little fellow. He danced instead of walking and he sang instead of speaking. He wrote in secret code over the walls of his room. He was soon nicknamed "Weirdo Calhoun." While those around him saw him as increasingly strange, Weirdo Calhoun simply went about his business, that being his personal exploration into who he really was. While in school, Calhoun was teased about being a geek or a nerd, but Calhoun simply went about his own way of doing things, never giving a thought to being normal. Weirdo Calhoun ignored the bullies and simply laughed at their attempts to make him feel bad about himself.
One day, a competition was announced and everyone who could get together an act did so. There was a cash prize and everyone thought themselves to be winners. Weirdo Calhoun gathered together all the other "weirdos" in school and they formed a group, with everyone doing his or her thing in the act. Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out would be the last to perform. Would they be driven out of town and ridiculed? In Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out, author Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has managed to merge the world of rap with problems common to the elementary school child and has come out a winner!
Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out is written, rapped and produced by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. You can download music to accompany the rap phrases in the book and at the end there is a surprise CD that helps the child to read along and also participate in Karaoke. If you have a child who feels left out in school or has been labeled a "nerd," then Weirdo Calhoun and the Odd Men Out just might help to bring your child out of the doldrums. I loved the way the authors gave children the idea that Weirdo Calhoun was just an ordinary child with different interests than most children. I also appreciated the fact that Weirdo was able to get together other children who felt alienated and then bring them together in a manner so that children and adults could both see the talents of the children who were different. Weirdo is a lovable character to whom most children will relate.
