Puppies are adorable, but what if the puppy has big ears? Willie is a Yorkshire Terrier with one problem: exceptionally large ears. Clairmarie H. Field wrote Willie’s Gift to help children understand that the very thing that we often identify as odd can be the thing that makes us special and important. One day, Willie’s mom takes him to school, where Ms. Karen trains dogs to follow commands. Willie is praised for listening well and learning quickly. This praise helps Willie understand that listening is a greatly needed skill. When his mom takes him to visit Great-Aunt Grace, who lives with several other senior citizens, he listens to her and makes her feel special. The next time they visit, several of the residents ask that Willie visit them. His mom explains that those large ears were made for listening and that spending time listening to others is a great way to make them happy. This book will help your child accept their uniqueness and learn how they are special.

Is there something your child struggles with because it singles them out as different from their friends? Clairmarie H. Field writes on a child’s level about an issue that bothers many children—being different. Bullies make it their job to make any difference the target of their cruel intentions. Willie’s big ears bother him because they make him stand out as being different. What makes your child feel different? Use this book as a conversation starter about the benefits of being unique. Discuss how differences work together to create a society that runs smoothly. Willie’s Gift is also a great book to introduce your children to homes for senior citizens. Your child will love the illustrations by Maggie Sullivan. Make sure your child receives unconditional love and acceptance. That will help them learn to accept themselves.
