Wise Home by A. K. Frailey will teach children how wonderful it is to live in harmony with nature and spend time with family. The story is told from the perspective of an older woman remembering her experiences as a seven-year-old girl whose parents sent her to stay for a while at her Great-Aunt Wilda’s farm. There, the little girl learns many things, from kneading dough to tending the garden, while spending time in nature. She also makes new friends with some of the animals living in the area. That’s how she meets Margaret, a cat who tells her about her time as a kitten. All of this makes the little girl feel renewed, always trying new things and cherishing every moment because she knows that her parents will eventually come for her.
I loved A. K. Frailey’s writing style. Her descriptions are beautiful, like when she talks about the little girl walking home at night under the stars, with fireflies glowing all around her, because those details make you feel like you’re part of the story. I also really liked the child's experiences because they emphasize values like empathy and respect for elders. Great-Aunt Wilda is a kind and lively woman who shares valuable advice, which is why the little girl admires her, follows her guidance, and learns many new things from her, creating moments that feel warm and homey. Additionally, the illustrations by Laura Frailey and Rebekah Frailey are charming, highlighting the key details of each chapter. Wise Home will teach children that a true home is where there is love and mutual respect.
