Witchwood by Kalyn Josephson is book three in the Ravenfall series. It picks up where Anna is working her last day at her grandmother’s tea shop, called Merrow. She delays going home to avoid saying goodbye to her older twin sisters, Kara and Rose, as they head off to college. It reminds her of how much work will be left on her shoulders while they are gone. Then there’s Colin, who is now fifteen and has just spent his summer training with his brother Liam to protect people from magical creatures. He is learning to drive Liam’s car and isn’t doing a good job. But together, Anna and Colin, along with their familiars, soon find themselves on another wild adventure, from responding to reports of a kelpie in Olympic National Park to investigating a series of witch disappearances that lead them to a town called Witchwood.
Kalyn Josephson did a wonderful job of blending humor and haunting magic into a story that felt both intimate and epic. I enjoyed following Anna’s growth in mastering her ancestral Stern magic that also mirrored her journey of self-acceptance and faith. Colin’s character was interesting as well because I was able to see his struggles to control his Raven powers and his fear of becoming like the Ravens who misused theirs. I loved how the author shows generational powers from Gran being telekinetic to Aunt Miriam and Leah being witches tied to a coven in Witchwood. The pacing was steady, and the dialogue was sharp. Fans of Amari and the Great Game by B.B. Alston will find the same mix of mystery, magic, and heart here.
