Write Out Your Drops, by Selin Senol-Akin, will dazzle you with poems about finding the strength to live your authentic self. The themes are wide and varied, from struggling with hard times to finding happiness in unexpected ways. Almost anyone can relate to these emotional topics, and it's nice for readers to know they aren't alone. Sometimes it's hard to put deep, complex thoughts and feelings into words, and this is where Senol-Akin's skill and talent come in. Even though the poems are about individual experiences, they are universal too. Some of the poems feel like songs, and this is because of the lovely lyricism they have. Some poems are more concrete, some abstract, but there is something for everyone here.
If you have trouble expressing your emotions or need to sort out a life issue, poetry can help you do that, and this volume acts as a catharsis to help you get there. Just like music is therapeutic, poetry can be too, as Senol-Akin shows. This poet conveys many moods, layers, and textures, showing that's it's okay to own your emotions and their origins. The phrasing is simple and easy, but conveys complex and moving ideas. Since some of the subjects of the poems are about psychological issues, family, and strong emotions, this collection of poems could serve as a self-help tool or would be great for classroom discussion or book club selection. Trigger warnings may apply for some of the topics, like narcissistic abuse, loss, and pain. But there are positive topics too, like forgiveness, healing, and wholeness. If you're looking for poetry that will move you and help you work through some life issues, be sure to put Write Out Your Drops, by Selin Senol-Akin, on your reading list.
