Yellow Boot Gets Stuck in the Mud by J. Loretta follows a bright yellow boot that comes off Right Foot during a rainy run along a muddy path. Right Boot is left behind while a little girl, pulled along by her dog, keeps running home with one bare foot and one booted foot. At home, the father bathes the girl, notices the missing boot, and hears how she ran the rest of the way laughing. The abandoned Right Boot spends the night filling up with rain and mud until morning, when the father finds the boot stuck upright in the mud. He hoses down and scrubs the boot, drying it on a radiator. The next day, it reunites with Left Boot, and Right Foot and Left Foot both arrive, but a mix-up doesn't mean the reunion is perfect just yet.
Yellow Boot Gets Stuck in the Mud is an adorable picture book that reinvents what happens when a seemingly ordinary object is lost during a familiar childhood routine. I love how the author uses emotion to provide Right Boot with a way to make the loss relatable to young readers, and it was so sweet to see my daughter go into her little closet afterward to organize her shoes so they are together, right and left, and not in a pile on the floor. J. Loretta’s writing uses plain, conversational sentences shaped by the boot’s observations, which suits young listeners and supports read-aloud pacing. Mlle. Jennyfair’s illustrations add warmth through loose line work, expressive poses, and gentle humor that breathe visual life into the story. Overall, this is a lovely story, especially for rainy day reading, and a great addition to the bedtime rotation. Very highly recommended.
