If you’ve ever seen the Yin Yang symbol and wondered what it’s about, Yin Yang: The Elusive Symbol That Explains the World by Jack Rasmussen with a foreword by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is for you. Framed by the author’s interest in Asian spirituality and inspired by a year in which he lived in Taiwan as a Fulbright Scholar, the narrative addresses the history and philosophy behind the symbol and discusses its practical application in the world today to foster greater balance, happiness, purposefulness, peace, and centeredness for individuals and humanity. Filled with photographs and inspirational quotes, it includes an appendix with extensive references for further reading and bonus content in the form of journal entries from the author’s first month in Asia.
In Yin Yang, Jack Rasmussen shares his spiritual journey as a Christian who studied Asian religions and philosophy and found profound lessons about duality, balance, and self-acceptance in the Yin Yang symbol. The well-paced and engaging narrative uses easy-to-understand terms and concepts, blending personal experiences with material from recognized sources in Asian philosophy. I especially liked the discussions on mindfulness, purposefulness, and empathetic leadership. No matter your religious affiliation or lack of one, this book offers helpful thoughts on how to find greater joy, acquiescence, and meaning in life while pursuing balance and inner peace. In a world that seems more out of balance with every evening news report, I found Yin Yang by Jack Rasmussen to be compelling, insightful, informative, and inspirational. Highly recommended.
