Zany Zoo Adventures with Cadie the Rescue Dog by Natalie McCurry follows Cadie, a rescued German Shepherd, on a special visit to the M.D. Zoo, a teaching zoo that normally welcomes school groups. With her mother beside her, Cadie meets zookeeper Miss Melissa, who guides them through the grounds and explains how the animals live. Each stop gives Cadie a closer look at a different species while her reactions turn the tour into a dog’s-eye view of the zoo. She races Speedy the tortoise, exchanges barks with Scarlet the macaw, watches keepers care for animals, and discovers how unfamiliar creatures behave. As Cadie moves through the zoo, the visit becomes a series of encounters that connect animal facts with her playful observations, leading her toward the final stops of a day created especially for her.
Natalie McCurry’s Zany Zoo Adventures with Cadie the Rescue Dog is a delightful children’s book. The first-person writing is playful and easy for children to follow, with animal facts worked naturally into Cadie’s reactions. Her surprise at learning that a binturong smells of buttered popcorn is the kind of detail kids will remember. At the end, Cadie asks readers to draw their favorite animal, giving them a simple way to choose what interests them most. Chris Schwink uses a hand-drawn cartoon style with bold shapes and expressive faces suited to Cadie’s playful viewpoint. His elephant bath illustration places her right in the splash, creating a funny visual moment children can enjoy. This is a lovely pick for young animal lovers and families who enjoy learning together.
