In a collection of thought provoking pieces, Chris Bent guides the reader on a tour of a wide range of topics, from shopping to motherhood. He draws on his experiences in the navy, through to his relationship with his wife and observations of his daughters. His childhood makes an appearance or two as well in 1-800-For-Women-Only. Chris’ voice is well preserved throughout the narrative. While I have never met him, the style is very in line with how I imagine he would talk, which I feel lends itself well to what he is saying. The book in its entirety is a series of conversations pointed to make one consider more deeply what they see passing before their eyes, day after day.

1-800-For-Women-Only is not a book to read just casually while waiting for someone to finish putting their lipstick on, although the relatively short nature of the chapters does lend itself to quick consumption of the material. Where this book shines is in making a person think. Why is our society the way it is? Why do we let ‘normal’ be defined the way it is? There are some chapters that can, due merely to their subject, make a person uncomfortable. They demand to be thought out. Each piece pulls at the spirit and intelligence, alternately challenging and affirming. In obvious reference to the title, the book is intended for women, but I feel, however, that men would greatly benefit from what Chris Bent has to say as well. A read well worth the time, but more worth the contemplation.
