Author Biography

Elena Pomană is a Romanian author, communication strategist, and advocate for belonging and human dignity. She has dedicated her life and work to challenging stereotypes, fostering deep human connection, and creating spaces where people can be truly seen beyond societal labels.

As a storyteller who believes in the power of lived experiences to shift mindsets, Elena invites audiences to look beyond assumptions and reconsider what it means to be human. This philosophy lies at the heart of her memoir, 1 in 2 Million: Between God’s Silence and the Noise of the World, a deeply moving book that explores identity, faith, prejudice, and the universal search for belonging.

Her unique perspective on inclusion is shaped by both her professional expertise and her personal journey living with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). Elena turns this rare condition into a catalyst for institutional change. She is the founder of the Dăruiește Fericire (Give Happiness) Association, and proudly serves as the FOP Ambassador for Romania, an Ambassador of the Romanian Diversity Charter, and a member of the International Presidents’ Council (IPC). Her high-impact social initiatives have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Romanian PR Award Diploma of Excellence and the Community Transformation Award.

In her memoir 1 in 2 Million, born in Romania with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, Elena Pomana grows up watching permanent bone growth slowly restrict her movements while her family searches for treatment after political unrest opens Romania’s borders. Her mother takes her to hospitals in Italy while hiding her exhaustion. Life at home is shaped by teachers who shame her publicly and doctors who question whether she belongs inside ordinary classrooms. During adolescence, Pomana begins confronting God directly during medical crises that leave her unable to swallow or trust promises about recovery. Her older sister Andreea remains beside her through the years of humiliation, fear, prayer, and physical decline. As Pomana fights to remain visible inside a society uncomfortable with disability, she discovers how small acts of compassion can change the meaning of survival.

Elena Pomana’s 1 in 2 Million embodies the kind of spiritual, beautiful honesty that asks readers to observe pain instead of looking away from it. Pomana writes with startling openness, especially during the throat flare-up that leaves her unable to swallow. Yet Pomana also makes room for grace. A visit to Prislop Monastery beside Saint Arsenie Boca’s tomb feels like a woman searching for rest inside a body that rarely grants it. What stays with the reader most is the author’s refusal to accept humiliation quietly. When a coaching instructor dismisses her by telling her to remain among “your handicapped,” she answers the insult with composure, self-respect, and public conviction. Readers interested in disability memoirs, Christian life writing, or firsthand accounts of medical treatment during the pandemic will find much to consider in Pomana’s experiences. Very highly recommended.

Elena Pomană writes with the grace of someone who has learned that survival is not about strength, but about presence. 1 in 2 Million is the memoir of a woman who grew up in post‑communist Romania with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP)—a condition so rare that fewer than 1 in 2 million people are born with it. Her prose is restrained, almost clinical at times, but the emotion bleeds through every line: her mother’s hidden exhaustion in Italian hospital corridors, the teachers who shamed her publicly, the doctors who questioned whether she belonged in ordinary classrooms. When Pomană confronts God directly during a medical crisis that leaves her unable to swallow, the book becomes something transcendent—not a crisis of faith, but a deepening of it. Her sister Andreea, who never left her side, emerges as a quiet, unforgettable hero. This is not a book about inspiration. It is a book about what it means to remain visible when the world wants you to disappear. Bravely written, beautifully honest, and absolutely essential reading.
