How many visual artists do you know? Have you seen any of their work? Have you wondered why their work is so important? Throughout history, artists have been the social commentators on what’s happening in the world around them, in their time. Leonardo da Vinci has often been described as a man way ahead of his time. He was interested in so many things and his scientific drawings and studies continue to marvel engineers of the twenty-first century. In an era well before cameras, cell phones, and selfies, Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun painted royal portraits. For centuries, portraiture art was the only means of creating an image of a person. Hard to imagine in this era of selfies. Moving into the twenty-first century, graffiti artists and conceptual artists use unusual and different mediums and avenues to express themselves and make political statements. There is so much history in art, so much one can learn about the time period and what affects the people in that era.

Allan Morey’s children’s nonfiction book, 12 Artists Who Changed the World, is an informative introduction into the world of art and how it defines who we are and the era in which we live. I’m sure it must have been difficult to choose only twelve artists, as there are so many more who have made compelling contributions. But the ones chosen span the centuries and demonstrate to young readers the many ways art communicates to us, how art challenges current events and so much more. Each artist is introduced with a short biography, providing just enough information to intrigue the young reader. Images of the artist and selected works are included as well as some challenging questions or statements for students to discuss or consider. Allan Morey’s 12 Artists Who Changed the World is a marvelous introduction to art and what it means to us.
