As the title suggests, "12 Anecdotes About Life" is an anthology consisting of twelve short stories that are designed to impart one lesson or another in life. The stories include 'Share and Have Some Chocolates', 'Money Can't Buy Everything', 'To Be Humane', 'Bonds with Animals', 'Being There and Letting Go', 'To Be Alive', 'Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated', 'The Power and Faith of Determination', 'Know Your True Friends- Be One', 'To Touch the Raindrops', 'Channeling the Anger Within', and 'Flower Power'. These stories are woven together by the narrator, Anita, and it is told from her point of view, in various conversations with the characters in these stories.
Payal Roy's book obviously aims to be inspirational. The author collected twelve stories that she believes can help people deal with their own lives. The use of the first person voice is successful in connecting the parts into a whole but at some point, it renders the stories a bit impersonal. The message is certainly loud and clear and one can already get the drift from the titles of the stories themselves. This lack of subtlety is quite glaring so that it could turn off some readers. However, this seems to be the intention of the author. Also, these lessons are not unique and one has probably read about them before. Despite these observations, I commend the author for trying to spread a message of hope in a society that sometimes seems to have given up on life already. I recommend this book because it is an easy read and I believe we have to be reminded of these values from time to time.
