Education not only feeds the mind, but it also opens door to so many possibilities in life. And yet, even in North America where education is more readily available to every child, there is a growing need for educative ideas to promote literacy, improve learning skills and provide the necessary materials to learn. In the United States, a nation-wide program involving seniors in the schools (foster grandparents) gives seniors a much-needed source of income while helping so many young people from many different backgrounds improve their learning skills. Well-known personalities like Alan Page and Barbara Bush (fondly known as the First Lady of Literacy) donated time, money and energy to helping young people learn the skills they needed to succeed. Even young people, like Bill Zandi, have stepped up to help other students. It started with a project to provide much-needed supplies to New Orleans schools destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. There are even schools in India that promote happiness, all in an effort to make education more than just learning to read and write.

Patricia Hutchison’s nonfiction children’s book, 12 Stories about Helping in Education, has presented twelve stories about different organizations and groups, mostly in the United States, that have gone the extra mile to provide the resources to effectively educate young people, especially those with particular needs. Each story is accompanied by photographs to illustrate the projects and the people behind them. As well as a short introduction to each project, and the founding person and principle behind the project, there are bullet points in sidebars of key issues facing educators. There are also sidebars providing some interesting points for further discussion, research or just to make the young reader think about these issues. The back of the book includes some interesting tips on how everyone can help in the process of educating our young people. There is so much we all can do to help young people with their education, both locally and around the world. Patricia Hutchison’s 12 Stories about Helping in Education is a valuable book with an important message. Education is the key.
