The angels of heaven are straining against their God-given role. Discontent turns to envy and eventually into lust for the freedom enjoyed by mankind. Jealous of humanity's exalted place in the Almighty's heart, they conspire with the fallen angel Satan and hatch a plot to leave their positions and hold dominion over humans. They start taking human wives and dividing humanity among themselves, defying the Almighty and playing right into Satan's hands. Only the City of Siriad, guided by Seth's descendants, is willing to adhere to the Almighty's will and stand up against the Watchers.
The Corruption, the first book in Jason and Jennifer Reinoehl's The Age of the Watchers series, is a sumptuous mix of biblical mythology and epic fantasy. This sweeping tale of angelic beings cursed with envy and lust for humanity is a grand feat of world building. The Reinoehls have taken biblical lore and woven it with their own imaginations to craft a story that, on its own, could have been an extension of the Bible's first chapters. One thing I found so fascinating with this novel was the ironic characterizations. The angelic beings were more human in their failings and desires than the steadfast leaders of Siriad. The Reinoehls create great characters, so much so that I found myself actually empathizing with the Watchers’ predicament and their desire to be something more than what they were created for. Biblical stories are known for painting the world black and white; evil and good. The authors manage to provide varying shades of morally murky grey. Betrayal and mercy; ambition and faith are merely two sides of the same coin. The Corruption is a great, albeit very long, read. With that said, I am perfectly willing to go another couple of nights without enough sleep just to read the next installment in this promising series.
