Paul Buchheit's 365 Sonnets: Celebrating Each Day with a "Little Song" is a collection of the author's original work, all in classic 14-line poems, with each corresponding to a day of the year. Buchheit links the date to both real and widely known holidays, as well as more quirky and obscure celebrations or observances. Among them is January 12, Feast of Fabulous Wild Men, which describes an old man in a birch cabin near a smoky pond where memories form during shared tasks. August 5th’s Work Like a Dog Day follows a man enduring long hours outside a transit depot, coping with financial pressure. October 6th’s Mad Hatter Day depicts Alice witnessing a quarrel between the Hatter and the Hare at a tea party. And, in a brilliant twist, December 25th’s Christmas Day is an ode to Santa delivering perks to those who least deserve them.

Paul Buchheit's 365 Sonnets gives language to the days in ways that are sharp, lyrical, and thoughtfully honor the defining technical elements of an English sonnet. It is nearly impossible to pick favorites, so I will share the most memorable to me, one that is fun and another that was solemn and piercing. March 2nd, Old Stuff Day, which evokes the quiet presence of memory through attic clutter with gorgeous olfactory imagery like a musty scent and a ragged doll in a wistful, nostalgic tone. June 19th, Juneteenth, is a stark, unflinching sonnet that confronts the brutality of slavery without softening a single blow. Harrowing and visceral, Buchheit paints brutal imagery, from greasy nourishment to acid sweat, and the blackened pustules of dehumanization and trauma. Buchheit’s ability to honor both a calendar and a conscience, as well as elicit a smile, makes this collection a fantastic addition to our daily routines. Very highly recommended.
