Daedalus by Dr Simon Spence is the thirteenth book in the Early Myths series. Step into the life of Daedalus, a famous inventor in Greek mythology, as he embarks on a journey that culminates in the creation of an epic labyrinth. His abilities as a craftsman come in handy when he needs to protect people from a creature called the Minotaur, but it won’t be that simple. When he conflicts with the evil King Minos, he gets locked inside his own labyrinth where he and his son must work together if they have any hope of escaping. The opening will easily draw children into the story with excitement over Daedalus’ latest creation. This is a simple way to introduce early readers to this character’s love of invention and to elements from the origins of the Minotaur to the evil king Minos.
While this is primarily Daedalus’ story, you see the introduction of his son Icarus and the creation of the Minotaur. This story is adapted for young readers, so it is an age-friendly tale that all ages can enjoy. The story pairs well with charming images that make use of gentle colors. The illustrations make you feel like you’re looking into the past with a unique quality to the visuals that pair well with the myth and use details, such as the vases in Daedalus’ workshop, that give children little hints of the ancient era. The visuals also have a subtle playfulness to them, such as riding a bull, that allows young readers to enjoy some humor in the story. Daedalus by Dr Simon Spence is a charming tale that brings a Greek myth to life and introduces children to invention, discovery, and the labyrinth.
