A Change in the Wind by Labriano Anaya is a spellbinding historical novel with a powerful setting, exploring loss, self-exploration, and redemption, a novel that is spiritually rich and very adventurous. Meet Francisco de Anaya Almazan, a man who loses his wife, children, and brother after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. He wouldn’t go back to his position in His Majesty’s service, having lost everything that mattered to him. He feels like an empty man, laughter and joy now gone from his life. But he sets out on a spiritual journey, compelled by the laughter of a young girl and the sweetness in the voice of a ten-year-old; he begins an internal journey that will lead him to start all over again. He begins to believe in a purpose, in God, and in love, and this new man is destined for far more than he could have imagined in the pain of his loss.
This is a well-crafted novel and I loved the setting, the religious references, the cultural and historical elements, and mostly the colors and scents that come out clearly through the narrative, allowing the reader to see vivid images of the places in which the story takes place. The plot is well-imagined and executed with great mastery. Readers will love the fact that the story is balanced, featuring very compelling characters and strong themes. The writing is excellent and it captures the emotional depth of the story with vividness and great clarity. A Change in the Wind is both an inspiring and a hugely entertaining story. I couldn’t put it down, I was completely transported into the world of the characters.
