"A Giant Pencil" by 9 year old Connor Wilson is the story of a young boy, Billy, who feels grumpy all the time. Why is Billy so grumpy? Well, he is the youngest of seven siblings, and always being picked on. His parents fuss at him more than at the others. At school, there is the school bully, the mean lunch lady, his teacher, and the principal, all making him grumpy. When Billy wishes they would all disappear, something magical happens. A giant pencil falls from the sky. The pencil is taller than Billy, but feels as light as a feather. Billy soon discovers that he can erase the things that have been making him grumpy! Annoying brothers . . . erased! Annoying sisters . . . erased! Mom and Dad . . . erased! Soon Billy has erased all of his problems. But Billy finds himself lonely, angry, and sad. Then he has a wonderful thought – that pencils aren’t really meant for erasing; they are meant for drawing!

Connor Wilson is a creative and imaginative writer. Though "A Giant Pencil" is a simple story, and at times predictable, it teaches a valuable lesson in a very creative way. Who hasn’t wished that their troubles could simply be erased? But life’s troubles are a necessary part of growing up; it is what we learn from them that matters most. "A Giant Pencil" has very bright, yet primitive, illustrations that guide the reader through the story. It is, overall, a fun and original story that elementary aged children will enjoy reading. I am certain Connor will be delighting readers for years to come. I look forward to watching his literary journey.
