A More Deadly Union: Peri Minneopa Mysteries, Book 4 is a private investigator mystery written by Gayle Carline. Private Investigator Peri Minneopa’s main concern at the moment was keeping her client, friend and personal assistant, Benny Needles, from spending his entire insurance settlement on Dean Martin collectibles, and helping him work with Willem Chen, his decorator, after an arsonist had tried to destroy his home. Then the unexpected happened. Peri received a call from Chief Fletcher telling her that there was a shooting, and that Skip had been injured. While the gunshot he received in his thigh was not a major life-threatening wound, he had a concussion received when he fell from the catwalk of the warehouse where the gun battle had taken place. Skip was in a medically induced coma and would remain unconscious for as long as there was swelling in his brain. Chief Fletcher managed to get Peri in for a few moments to see her long-time boyfriend and companion, but she'd have a hard time getting to see him during visiting hours as the hospital was only allowing family to visit.
Gayle Carline's private investigator mystery, A More Deadly Union: Peri Minneopa Mysteries, Book 4, is suspenseful and fast-paced. While this is Book 4 in the Peri Minneopa Series, Carline weaves just enough background material into her plot to allow readers to enjoy this book as a stand-alone novel. She quickly brings those new readers up to date with Peri's career, her issues with Skip, who had proposed to her in the past, her friend/assistant, Benny, and her not-always-smooth relationship with Skip's fellow police officers. She's promised not to interfere with the investigation into the warehouse shooting which cost several officers their lives and left two others in the hospital. But working for her newest client, Willem's boyfriend and soon-to-be spouse, has her convinced that the two cases are intertwined. Carline's plot is first-rate, and the solution to the mystery is in no way a predictable one. Peri is a marvelous character, but the real star of this book for me was Benny, who has OCD and Asperger's, and who rises to the situation with courage, determination, and classic style. A More Deadly Union: Peri Minneopa Mysteries, Book 4 is highly recommended.
