A Perfect Storm of Injustice by Jack Saarela commences with Charles Wilkerson being locked in a prison cell. The narrative backtracks to his childhood as an adopted son in a white family. After succeeding in high school, Charles enrolled at Florida Atlantic University, where he met Dana, the lovely lady destined to be his wife. One fateful morning, when Charles left early for work, Dana and their son were sleeping at home. An intruder entered via the back door and murdered Dana. The local law enforcement system was quick to place the blame on Charles and suppressed other evidence. His wife’s family turned against him and alienated the affection of his son. Charles was sentenced to life imprisonment and it was many years before he was proven innocent.
A Perfect Storm of Injustice by Jack Saarela represents a riveting fictionalization of the social issue of unjust convictions. The character of Charles was likable and it was easy to identify with his plight. I appreciated the way the author demonstrated racism in action and convinced the reader that prejudice was a contributing factor. I felt a strong sense of outrage and horror as the murder of Dana was compounded by a lack of proper effort to trace the real killer. The efforts of Charles' lawyers to prove his innocence, the appeal, and the campaign were all sources of suspense. As I read, I was constantly hoping that the truth would be uncovered. The narrative brought tears to my eyes when justice was finally served. This book ought to be assigned reading in university courses.
