A Salute to Patriotism is the story of Howard Peckham, father of the author Jean Peckham Kavale. This is the story of a man who knew, from a young age, exactly what he wanted to do with his life. It is the story of a man who devoted his life to that mission, serving the country that he loved. Understanding the way that a military man not only acts, but how he feels and thinks about things, is interesting to anyone and Major General Howard Peckham definitely led an interesting life as depicted throughout this book. But this isn’t just a book of the professional work of the Major General. No, it’s also about his personal life and his relationship with his wife and children as well.

I found it very interesting learning about history in this way. The author’s voice really comes through and it’s obvious that there is a lot of care and love for her father. There is also plenty of information from the author’s point of view to go along with what is being said about wars and invasions that her father took part in. She has a lot of pride in what her father managed to accomplish and how he did it. There’s a reason he was a Major General, after all. This is excellently written and it is also very descriptive. I was intrigued by everything I read and would definitely do better with history if it was all written this way.

A Salute to Patriotism: The Life and Work of Major General Howard L. Peckham by Jean Peckham Kavale is the personal story of Major General Howard L. Peckham. What makes the book special is that it is penned by his daughter, who showcases the legacy of her father and captures the love her father had for his country. Howard Peckham served the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for twenty years. The story not only gives insight into the life of Howard L. Peckham, but also the lives of the people who lived during and after WWII. He proved his mettle even when he headed the Fuels and Lubricants Division of the Quartermaster General's office. He was acknowledged for his meritorious work at that time. Howard Peckham also headed the American Graves Registration Command in post-war Paris. He served in responsible posts until he retired in 1956.

It is a book that speaks highly of one man's passion for his country and duty and how that dominated his life. A daughter's love, admiration and respect for her father come through clearly in the book. The author has added a personal touch to the biography by sharing pictures that show her father's glory and early days. The author is honest and articulate when it comes to sharing her father's life with readers. Howard Peckham's personal life has also been discussed, showing readers that, apart from being an amazing man, he was also a good husband and father.

A Salute to Patriotism: The Life and Work of Major General Howard L. Peckham by Jean Peckham Kavale delves into the life of Howard Louis Peckham, a descendant of revolutionary war heroes. He dreamed of graduating from West Point and, once he accomplished that dream, he went on to serve for twenty years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. When he became a civilian after long service, he continued his patriotic duties as he worked for the Free Europe Committee. He travelled abroad to meet with Western European diplomats. His life was one full of duty and service to his country until his last day.

Before reading this book, I only knew about Major General Howard L. Peckham in passing. I am, however, happy and even feel honoured that I read this book. Jean Peckham Kavale, his daughter, tells the story of her father’s life the way only a loving daughter could. The reader is given what I feel is an intimate look into the life of a man who gave his entire life to serving his country. I feel that such service is a selfless act and something more people could learn from Major General Howard L. Peckham. He truly shows us how you should care for your country and how to help it. The book itself is written well with a good eye to detail and flow. It is also edited well, making it an enjoyable read. I would recommend any military or patriotic historian give this one a try.
