A Wooden Heart in Plotlands by Dawn Knox is a historical novel that follows the intertwined lives of Miriam and Rebekah, two Jewish sisters, as they navigate the challenges of survival during World War II. The story begins in Nazi Germany, where the sisters face unimaginable loss and upheaval, including the deaths of their parents and the destruction of their home. Their journey takes them through the Kindertransport to England, where they struggle to rebuild their lives amid the chaos of war. Along the way, they encounter kindness and cruelty, forge new relationships, and confront the lingering pain of separation from loved ones. The narrative culminates in a deeply emotional reunion between Miriam and Karl, a man she thought she had lost forever, as they plan a future together in America.
Dawn Knox’s writing captures the emotional highs and lows of her characters with precision. The pacing ebbs and flows, allowing readers to fully feel the weight of the sisters’ struggles. Knox’s prose is descriptive, painting vivid scenes of wartime England and the contrasting lives of her characters. Readers who enjoy historical fiction focused on personal stories will appreciate the exploration of human connection. Wooden Heart in Plotlands will appeal to readers of similar historical novels in the vein of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, with its wartime German setting, family focus, and coming-of-age tension under rising persecution. It also echoes the emotional atmosphere of Holocaust-era novels such as Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale.
