A Work in Attraction by K.A. Ross follows Nellie, a twenty-four-year-old widow who works as a temp manuscript reader at Writers World Publishing. She hopes to turn her temporary role into a junior agent position, but faces stiff competition from Tonya, whom she dubs “Villain.” Each morning, she dives into the agency’s slush pile and sends along the most promising ones. Outside office politics and navigating the book world she once loved so much, she’s trying to rebuild her personal life after a devastating loss. Her support system includes a tight-knit, often chaotic circle of sisters and a caring mother-in-law who helped her through her grief. Then there’s her growing interest in Daniel, an accountant determined to prepare his late sister’s manuscript for publishing. Over time, their weekly meetings and tentative personal connection begin to open up new possibilities. Will Nellie get the promotion? Will she and Daniel create a new connection?

A Work in Attraction by K.A. Ross first grabbed me because of its cover, and I’m glad it did. It sounds warm and familiar, almost like listening in on someone else’s running inner commentary. I really connected with her in that sense because I also banter in my own head all the time. I saw a lot of myself in Nellie’s neuroses, her little mental asides, and the way she overthinks conversations while still trying to be brave. The writing is light on its feet, funny in quiet ways, yet still honest about grief and healing without getting too heavy. Fans of slow-paced romance, found-family dynamics, and behind-the-scenes publishing stories will really enjoy this read. It’s the kind of book that’s easy to sink into, with a voice that is friendly and familiar, and it left me genuinely glad I’d spent time with these characters. Great story!
