Abundance by Alan Chan is a gripping sci-fi thriller set in a near-future world of asteroid mining, artificial intelligence, and high-stakes corporate battles. Disgraced astronaut Charles 'Chuck' Sorrel takes on the straightforward job of investigating a deadly accident, but he quickly finds himself caught in a dangerous conspiracy. What starts as a simple inquiry turns into a fight for survival as he uncovers secrets that could change the future of space exploration forever. With detailed world-building and nonstop suspense, Abundance captures the excitement and dangers of humanity’s expansion into space. The science behind space travel and resource mining is incredibly well thought out, making the story not just futuristic, but entirely possible based on today’s technology.

Alan Chan has a real skill for making complicated science easy to understand while keeping the focus on the action and human drama. I liked the viewpoint on corporate greed and space politics because it is unsettlingly realistic and draws a lot of similarities with issues today. This makes the stakes feel genuinely high as Sorrel dives deeper into his investigation and gets us invested emotionally. The pacing is also spot-on, mixing high-energy action with tough ethical questions that force you to think about what progress costs. The characters are real and relatable despite the extraordinary setting—Sorrel, in particular, is flawed but compelling, making his journey all the more engaging. Chan also has a talent for vivid descriptions, making everything from cramped space stations to vast asteroid fields come to life in an almost cinematic way. Beyond all the danger and excitement of these descriptions, the book does a great job of weaving together themes of power, resource scarcity, and enduring hardships to hit readers in the heart and mind too, making a simple thriller into something much more thought-provoking. Overall, Abundance is an exciting and intelligent sci-fi novel I would definitely recommend for both hardcore science fiction fans and anyone looking for a smart, fast-paced thriller set in space.
