My first novel of Leah Devlin, Aegir’s Curse, is the second book in the Woods Hole Mystery Series. Although I have not (yet) read the first book that introduced most of the cast in Aegir’s Curse, Ms. Devlin’s writing style allowed me instant access into the lives of some of the most well developed, empathetic and ‘human’ characters I’ve seldom had the pleasure of meeting. Woods Hole is an actual village near Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the perfect setting for this story that includes a series of plot lines interwoven with a nine-hundred-year-old mystery.
Although a definitive page-turner, I wouldn’t call it a thriller. The impetus to turn the pages, taking only short breaks to sleep, stems not from constant action and increasing levels of excitement; rather, the spur was the simple but effective storytelling style of the author. Along with developing the plot, Ms. Devlin was adept at creating a mini-story around each additional detail that builds upon the well-rounded humanity of her characters. With the hands of a master artist, Ms. Devlin interweaves plot lines, character development and factual references with ease and a clearly recognizable skill.
Not only is Aegir’s Curse a well told story, the fiction is enhanced by the author’s obvious expertise in several technical, historical, and geographical areas. The technical areas, micro and marine biology, and neurophysiology, to name only a few, are presented in such a way that readers (like me) can easily understand not only the nature and specifics of these sciences, but also how they impact on the story. Bottom line, this is an outstanding, well written tale. I highly recommended Aegir’s Curse by Leah Devlin to all readers, regardless of your favorite genre.
