Agency Rules: Never an Easy Day at the Office, by Khalid Muhammad, unravels in tumultuous Pakistan, a country that is constantly rocked by violence caused by gang leaders and common criminals. Kamal Khan, son of a wealthy Pakistani industrialist, opts to serve his country. Chosen as one of the members of the Omega team, in a military operation that aims to curb the lawlessness in Karachi, his military career takes a different course. In six months, his team neutralizes more than two hundred criminals and detains another hundred, who are interrogated for valuable information. Pakistan’s civilian courts are paralyzed by fear so these detainees are handed over to military tribunals in a secret prison guarded by SSG commandos. After the success of this operation, Kamal joins the ISI Academy to train in counter terrorism. Meanwhile, David Northwright, an experienced intelligence operative who sells his expertise to the highest bidder, receives a call at an unholy hour. The paths of these two men will soon cross in events that will change the history of Pakistan.
Agency Rules is a fast paced action thriller set in one of the most dangerous places in the world, Pakistan. The author, Khalid Muhammad, admits that he is a fan of espionage novels and admires heroes like Jason Bourne, Jack Ryan and James Bond. His main protagonist, Kamal Khan, has all the characteristics of a spy hero. He is physically fit, an accomplished sniper, a good listener, fast on his head and toes, and possesses a kind of charm that ladies find irresistible. Despite all of these, he is unsure about himself in certain circumstances. And this is one of the things that I really like about his character because he does not come across as a superman, in spite of the superhuman conditions he finds himself in. This is a material that spy novels should be made of. With the author’s descriptive writing style and the story's incredibly plausible twists and turns, one cannot help but eagerly anticipate Kamal’s exploits, page after page, until the novel ends.
